ASME/GMC Excellent Medical Education Grants

Researchers working in medical education and healthcare professional training can apply for funding for research, development and innovation in these areas.

Applications are welcome across a broad range of the GMC’s 2026–30 strategic priorities, covering undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, as well as continuing professional development.

Historically, fewer applications propose research in the postgraduate and CPD areas, so these are particularly encouraged during this round of applications.

ELIGIBILITY

PIs must be an individual ASME member and their organisation must be able to fulfil the role of ‘research sponsor’ (this includes NHS organisations and academic institutions).

VALUE AND DURATION

Three grants of up to £5,000 each are available.

Projects can be up to 12 months in duration.

Grant funding can be used to:

  • hire a research assistant or student intern to work on the project (FEC, HEI and NHS Indirect Costs will not be supported)
  • pay for open access publisher fees where there is not already an agreement in place between the applicants’ institution and the publisher
  • pay for software licence agreements that are bespoke to the project (if there is not already an agreement in place between the applicants’ institution and the supplier)
  • pay for equipment specifically required for the project (any equipment costs must not include VAT)
  • support conference attendance (although this must not be more than one fifth of the total amount of the application)
  • provide transcription costs (these cannot exceed £16 per hour)
  • participant payments (the need to provide payments should be justified)
