NIHR Highlight Notice: Work and Health

Highlight notices outline health research priorities for NIHR’s funding programmes.

With this highlight notice, NIHR aims to generate high quality evidence to support the working age population to remain in or return to work, to leave happier and healthier on retirement, and to reduce economic inactivity. It is therefore inviting proposals that build understanding of work and health related priorities, including occupational health.

The research specifications for participating funding programmes (linked below) will include areas of interest, but general areas of interest for this call also include:

  • the impact of job quality on health
  • importance of labour market outcomes to understand the economics of work
  • improving access to, quality of and linkage between relevant datasets
  • supporting people with physical and/or mental health conditions to remain in the workforce or increase their chances of re-employment
  • supporting people to remain physically and mentally healthy in work, and retaining work up to retirement
  • early preventative interventions to reduce prevalence of MSK or other health and mental health conditions in the younger population
  • supporting children, young people and school leavers to transition into the workforce to become and remain economically active.
  • how to improve access to occupational health resources and other mental and physical health resources
  • reduce economic inactivity

This is not an exhaustive list and other research within the remit of the participating NIHR funding programmes will also be considered.

Applications are encouraged to take a transdisciplinary approach, utilising expertise from different academic disciplines, stakeholders, employers and the public.
