{"id":1861,"date":"2025-12-09T12:52:05","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T12:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/researchfunding.on.worc.ac.uk\/?p=1861"},"modified":"2026-01-06T16:49:59","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T16:49:59","slug":"nihr-development-and-skills-enhancement-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/researchfunding.on.worc.ac.uk\/?p=1861","title":{"rendered":"NIHR Development and Skills Enhancement Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"501\" height=\"64\" src=\"https:\/\/researchfunding.on.worc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/NIHR-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/researchfunding.on.worc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/NIHR-1.png 501w, https:\/\/researchfunding.on.worc.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/NIHR-1-300x38.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Funding for early to mid-career researchers who want to gain specific skills and experience to underpin the next phase of their research career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DSE awards must be used to help you develop the relevant and required skills to make a competitive NIHR personal award or NIHR research grant application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\">ELIGIBILITY<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to demonstrating how this award will support you to develop the skills you need to make a competitive application to the NIHR (e.g.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nihr.ac.uk\/research-funding\/funding-programmes\/career-development-funding-programmes\">career development awards<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nihr.ac.uk\/research-funding\/funding-programmes\">research funding programmes<\/a>), you must also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have completed any relevant pre-registration training (if you are applying as a clinical academic)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have a proposed English contracting organisation that is an HEI, NHS body, or other provider of health and\/or care services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hold a relevant PhD or MD, or have submitted your thesis for examination at the time of application (you must have been awarded your PhD or MD by the time you start the award)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have not submitted a DSE application in the previous submission window<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of particular interest are applications that will develop skills and experience within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nihr.ac.uk\/career-development\/research-career-funding-programmes\/postdoctoral\/dse\/dse-award-strategic-themes\">DSE award strategic themes<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HCPs developing practitioner academic careers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>knowledge mobilisation and implementation science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>health data science (HDS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clinical trials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>entrepreneurship and working with industry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\">VALUE AND DURATION<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This award provides funding for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the salary of the award holder for up to 2 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>training and development costs, including any related travel and subsistence, up to \u00a35,000 per year FTE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conference costs up to \u00a31,000 per year FTE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mentorship costs up to \u00a33,000, which may include working with people and communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the only costs that we will fund through a DSE award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants can request a 12, 18 or 24-month duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background\">KEY DATES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deadline: 11 March 2026*<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Review period: April 2026 &#8211; June 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start date: August 2026 &#8211; November 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*This scheme is open to applications all year round, with 3 review periods.
